Fret Whapper

The Fret Whapper is a handle attachment designed to work with StewMac fret press cauls. Fret press cauls are normally used in an arbor press, but when paired with the Fret Whapper, the caul becomes a controlled, hand-driven tool for seating frets at the bench.

This tool does not replace a fret press. Instead, it gives luthiers the flexibility to use the same press cauls they already own in situations where a full arbor press setup is impractical or unnecessary.

The original idea was developed by Brent Gable, based on the simple insight that a fret press caul can be just as effective when driven by hand, as long as it has a solid, well-designed handle.

Assembly Instructions
  1. Install the carriage bolt into the handle.
  2. Remove the drill press adapter and any brass cauls from the fret press caul.
  3. Align the slot in the fret press caul with the extensions on the handle designed to fit the slot.
  4. Place the caul on a rigid surface and tap the handle into place until fully seated.
Disassembly Instructions
  1. Insert a flat blade screwdriver into the slot on the side of the handle.
  2. Gently pop the carriage bolt upward.
  3. Remove the bolt and insert the punch shown in the gallery.
  4. Tap steadily until the fret press caul breaks free.

The Fret Whapper is ideal for touch-ups, partial refrets, and situations where you want the precision of a fret press caul without committing to a full arbor press setup.
